NH HIKES: MOUNT WILLARD TRAIL
Hikes in New Hampshire with a view
After taking the Cog Railway up Mount Washington, the next day of our anniversary vacation we decided to visit Crawford Notch and hike Mount Willard. Ash and I have hiked this every year and consider it a tradition. We’ve seen every season on Mount Willard except for winter (which we plan on doing this year!).
It is a popular 3.2 mile out and back trail that would be moderate for beginners/easy for experienced hikers. The trailhead is located across the train tracks of the railroad depot at AMC Crawford Notch Visitors Center. A short hike up a rocky, but well-maintained path brings you out to an opening at the top with a breathtaking view of Crawford Notch. To your left, you have views of the Presidential Range all the way to Mount Washington. The day we went was absolutely clear and you could see the Cog making its way up the side of the mountain. During the summer, it’s so beautiful and the breeze feels amazing after a hike. It’s a perfect spot to relax and enjoy a drink and snack. (However, the trail can be pretty busy on the weekends or holidays.)
On our way back down we always stop at the Centennial Pool, a good place to cool off especially dogs. It’s a small, little waterfall but pretty nonetheless. One of the other perks of this trail and that you get to see a LOT of adorable pups! Keep that in mind if you are thinking of bringing your dog. Last year, we even saw a moose not too far off the trail!
